Training is fun

Friday was supposed to be my jog day but it turned into a day off.My daughter had a fever and had to come home early. So Sat i went to Birch with Don Sissions he skate skied and i snowshoed on the bike trails i stayed off the groomed trails because it is funner going threw the deeper snow. Got lots of hill climbs in and spent 3 hrs on the trails.Sun i did sit ups, push ups and rode the trainer (resistance training) after that i did 6 miles on the snowshoes.

you sure spend a lot of time on the snow shoes. right on, gotta make the most of the snow and cold right.

i can't wait for some positive temps to get out for some real time on the bike though, i have full on cabin fever.

keep it up!

Soon we will all be riding again.I can't wait either.

Waddya mean soon?

cory smith said...

I said soon we (all)will be riding not just some of us.

If there is a snow-shoe section in one of these races you have got it made. Are you actually ‘running’ 10k on those shoes? Very impressive! I was pegging Greg as the most likely to be in the Green Jersey but I might be wise to put my money on you. Either way it is going to be a super competitive year. Has Don S been putting in the miles? I thought we was going to do La Rutta with Billy boy this year.

It is pretty hard to run unless you are on real hard stuff like a groomed trail so i am more like hiking in the miles i run were i can but the most of it is like a high tempo hike.I live 3 miles from work so i go back and forth for 6 miles i have to check my bins every day so it a good way to mix up the training.I don't like to ski but i love to run and snowshoe in the winter. Birch was fun climbing hills in the deep snow works your calfs real good.I won't be doing any cup races so no green jersey for me not like i would have won any races anyways.

Don is training hard mostly all skiing. He is planning on doing La Ruta with me which should be fun,but the more the marrier.

Don't peg me for anything Dave, I'm a hack, remember?

And lets not get in a this is how many miles I hike/walk a day thing.... HAHAHAHA!

Yup, I'm losing it. To much cold, snow, ice... I fell on me arse down stairs today.. maybe I hit me head.

I think if i were you guys i would be watching out for Mike The Crusher Caslor he stays awake all night thinking of ways to punish his opponents.

i agree, i think we might be in for a VERY competitive season in expert. i think paul benson might also race expert (for fun), luc a. is moving up, mike c is fast, nathan is very fast, hal is getting gears, hopefully tomek has time to race/train, plus all the others. should be awesome.

cory smith said...

Hey Kevin do you live in Morden? If you do you have some great trails to train on.I wish we had something like that in Portage.

Anonymous said...

I agree, this year could be good.

I expect to be beaten badly by Mike, Dave, Nathan, Kevin (cuz I think he lies about his training ;-) ), Paul, by a huge margin, and Dylan if he;s around, and Hal with gears? Good god, back to the back for me.

That's Ok though fast riders make me try harder., and it helps my self loathing and ridicule.... it feeds me.

And I forgot Graham, he was getting fast last year, oh and Tomek... oh well, I may be fighting for DFL.

Kevin B said...

hey cory, no, winnipeg actually. just in a club from Morden (don't ask my how, cause i don't even know). Would love to live there for the trails though, and now they even have a Tim's.

if you to head out for a ride some time in summer, let me know. their are some real nice flowing trails south of town (Tinker Creek area). AMAZING flow.

and as for Greg thinkin I BS about training. 4-6 hours a week right now including any running. usually only 20-30 hours a month. i am not a volume guy... or intensity either... short easy rides, that's my secret. last season i pushed it too hard mid season and overcooked it. less is more for me.

you can also add DJ to the expert list, talked to him today, he is moving up. maybe i'll move down to comp...

cory smith said...

Sounds good Kevin we should hook up for a ride.

Greg just posted a list of guys he going to beat at every race i am glad i am not doing cup races.

Hey Greg please spare me some pain there could be some money in it for you.(to put towards your new cx bike)maybe?I am just an old broken down boxer.

Anonymous said...

Yeah Cory, I will spare you, (like I'd have too), if you wait for me when it gets past 3 hours. ok?

And Kevin, you was fast at the start of last year, so don't overcook, and you'll be golden! Volume may kill me too, I guess I'll find out.

Hope to see some good battles out there.

The rumor is that Tomek is fat! Gears add weight ;) Dylan is here, gunning for the Canada games, and will eat you alive. Paul is Paul. Mike and Nathan are wild cards. Other then Paul (who is Paul) Billy boy is THE BEST rider in the province. There are some others as well. This will be a hard series to predict. The challenge, however, will be to have more fun then I do. I dare you to try, but it simply is not possible.

Kevin B said...

not to talk about "rumours" too much, but there has been talk of at least 1 or 2 former experts making come backs in 09. REALLY fast guys.

that is good news, more the better.

saw tomek last week, didn't look too fat too me. that cat can ride... did I ever tell you guys about "THE PASS" he made during Wed Night #1 last season? UNREAL!

hopefully we get back to having 4 or 5 elites in 09 too. hopefully Paul B goes in elite, he does not belong in expert with us old guys. oh wait, the current elites are in their 50's...

cory smith said...

Yeh that's bad when the 50 year old guys kick everyone's ass.You look in Aberta, they sometimes have 20 or more elites racing at one event.

Coach Dave said...

KB Now you know... you have to tell us who these 'Super Star' Old Timers are.

Bill and Don were/are racing Elite so that they could get the extra lap in, and Paul is definitely not an Expert. Don’t we have a rule for that?

Tomek is a mystery… if he trained (has he been?) he would be dynamite, as it stands he is still a fire cracker (same could be said for you Mr. KB). Assuming I know what you are referring to…“THE PASS” was a suicidal act of a homicidal racer. It was only cool because he made it… if someone had been hurt it would not have been so cool. Having said that, realistically if you want to win on that course you have to take some crazy ass risks and that is why I stopped racing there. One too many broken bones for my liking. Dose that make me old? There is a very definite top speed in the bush, which is well below most peoples actual top speed. Thus, it be comes a sprint in all the open sections, and a line up through the twisters. I really like the old course.

I think it is great that our best rider is one of our oldest. Although it highlights the developmental gaps in the sport/program it also draws attention to the ‘sport for life’ aspect of racing bikes. I am committed to still be racing 9-years from now.

Race to live. Live to race.

Kevin B said...

if daniel N and paul B both race, that is a good foundation for elite. if bill B and don S race elite again, they will keep them honest. olli is also an elite.

dave, you are an endurance freak, you should join em in elite. seriously, you can go the same speed for 8 hours, never mind one more lap. not like you can't ride at that level in MB. it would give you a reason to train even more.

Anonymous said...

I'm real tired right now, so training has stopped for a while..... building a club, and race kinda takes it out of me too.

I may suck this year... out.

cory smith said...

You'll be fine.Working ,training and having a family makes us all tired but we keep riding anyways.(i quess we are all crazy)

cory smith said...

I don't believe in an elite class unless there is enough guys to race against.I think you need at least 6 guys and up.I don't see know sense in 2 or 3 guys racing against each other. If there isn't at least 6 guys willing to move then they all should stay expert. They can stay and do extra laps all day if they want to.

Coach Dave said...

Paul, Olli, Daniel, Bill, Don, Jarred, and myself would make 6 and (according to Cory ;) the official Elite race number.

Thanks for your kind words KB. I am as fast as (with in 1-2 minutes) as all these guys with the exception of Paul when he is motivated and fit (or unfit for that matter). 8-hour races are a different game however. I am (self handicapping) on a ss which – all other things being equal – is about 20% slower. If I am to be competitive (i.e., win now and then) I would need to race with a group that is within that range. My primary concern of racing Elite is not being able to race master cat out of province, or Worlds. The test of metal this year will be the Enduro Series. I think you might see a changing of the guard at this distance. Gears will really help over a 100-miler.

Unfortunately, small numbers in each cat is a reality of mb racing. If we only have cats when there are sufficient numbers, then we would have only one cat. Take the women racing cats for example. It is true the fields are small enough to pretty much know what the placings are going to be at every race. However, we all seem to enjoy each other company (at least I do), love riding, and racing. Paul, Olli, Daniel, Bill, Don, Jarred, or some other speed freak - who comes first might not matter so much to these guys, but I will venture a guess that other people down the ranks would like a crack at the top places. Our top end Experts and Elites are lapping the field right now so there is a good argument for making another – albeit small – category.

Keep me in the loop with the Morden hammer fest. I would be into that.

Kevin B said...

dave - 20% handicap with SS... is that an "excuse"? didn't you just rant a week ago about no excuses being on a SS or something?

in Manitoba you can actually race "Elite" with an expert license, so you are still expert everywhere else. You just need to clarify it with the MCA office and I believe they provide a racer with some additional document or something.

anyway, it would be good to see a healthy Elite field again. that is all i am saying.

just to compare, what is the Elite field REALLY like in AB and SASK? are they all "real" elites or guys who would really belong in expert? obviously AB will have some real elites, but what about Sask?

anyone know?

With a points system (you get the points you move up) you are always assured that races are able to meet the fitness standards of the category. Patrick and I (who are about equal – sometimes he wins sometimes I do… that might have changed however now that he is out West) are somewhere in the middle - front of the average expert race. The slowest elite would fall somewhere in the top 10 expert. Daniel was about top 50 in Elite. You will see expert riders place in the top half of the elite field from time to time, and they tend to be masters. Our biggest problem in MB is technical riding (up and down). I rarely get dropped going up, but get hammered going down. Remember, in mountain biking, it is about who crosses the line first and not about who is the fastest (like a track and field event). Thus, the lack of qualifying standards

i just remember when i started, when neil was racing and there was a pretty good stable of young elites and even expert seemed really advanced... just miss seeing the real fast guys at races. hopefully again some day.
