XC8

Well i signed up for XC8 again today. This will be my third time.I am hoping to get threw it without any mech's.The first time i got a flat and had to run half a lap and then when i finally got in and changed my tire it blew before i got it on the bike so i had to change it again. Last year my rear wheel hub packed it in so i again had to run and then had to borrow a wheel from Shawn Z so i could keep riding. The good thing was that Scot at Olympia sent my wheel in and Mavic replaced the hole hub on warranty. One of the wings inside the hub had broke right off and got jammed so that is why my hub would not free wheel.

I will be great to have you there again. You and I will take them down… or try :) I had a flat one year (I think this year is my 5th?) and ran for 40-freaken minutes, I asked everyone that pasted if they had a spare I could have, but no one was in the giving mood. One time my chain would not stay on, and dropped every minute. One time I had the flu. One time I flatted just before I was going into one of the man eating holes in the gully. I crash sooo hard I though I had broken my hip. I should of pulled out right there, but it is always harder to stop then it is to keep going… even with a broken hip. I put in another couple of gimpy laps, then reality came crashing in. One year my gear was just stupid, whine whine whine. Hopefully this year my porage will be juuuuust right. I think because September is way after my first peak (July 24th ish) I have never actually had what I would call a great (or even good) XC8. Great, good or just a steaming pile I have a great time slugging it out on those zippy single track descents, and punchy climbs. I expect now that Patrick has had time to acclimate to his new mountainous digs he will be way ahead of us. Either way I will have more fun then you, him or any one. I say BRING IT ON!

It's always good times and the race keeps getting bigger. What gear did you try last year?Do think you need to go bigger or smaller this year?

I have been trying to increase the gear ratio each year by one tooth or so. I could have pushed a (much?) bigger gear last year and the mistake cost me the race… So to speak. I could not keep up on the flats. I think I rode 34/20? I will try 36/20 or something bigger this year. Much of it depends on the weather. I think I will go with slightly bigger and chance running some of the hills… That means running ball busters for 8-hours! If I could just lose 10 lbs it would all be good ;)

Lots hills +big gear=lots of running but you can run hills super fast. One of these years you will get it just right and if not there is always next year and so on and so on.
